Phyllis Sinclair
Canadian Folk Music Award nominated Singer-songwriter, Phyllis Sinclair uses her craft as a tool to ignite more compassionate, culturally-respectful ways of knowing. Sinclair's songs speak to Indigenous realities, and point to the power of her culture’s spirituality, using astronomy and mythology to allay and enlighten. Reverentially, she taps on the conscience of the established ethos to flag distinctions and inequities under a brilliant banner of song, disarming to solicit a self-imposed metamorphosis that transforms old ways of thinking into new possibilities. A deceivingly quiet and amiable diplomatist, her passion and advocacy are evident in her prose and her performance.
"Phyllis left no one behind as she carried away the audience on the wings of her songs and stories. Enchanted and engaged, they hung on every word and their deeper meaning. In mere heartbeats she had the audience laughing, then moved to tears. Simply put; a profound experience!" (Ian Mattey, Wits End, Winnipeg, MB, CA). Distinguished by Maverick Magazine as "A Lady of Conviction", Sinclair is Cree, and a member of Kawéchiwásik (York Landing First Nation), Manitoba. In 2021, Sinclair was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for her 5th album Ghost Bones. The album struck a cord with listeners immediately upon its release propelling Ghost Bones to #1 on the Canadian National Folk, Roots and Blues Chart, CKUA Radio Network's Top 100 albums of 2021, and her nomination from the Canadian Folk Music Awards.
